News: Driver arrested on DWI charge after crashing into Indianapolis canal

INDIANAPOLIS, IN – Police arrested an alleged drunk driver who crashed her car into an Indianapolis canal on Christmas night, WISH reports.

Police and firefighters responded to the scene in the area of the Indianapolis Colts Canal Playspace off of Saint Clair Street shortly after 11 p.m.

Investigators learned that a woman had driven down an embankment and through a park before breaking through ice and plunging into the frigid canal waters.

Dive teams went into the water and found no one inside the vehicle.  The driver, identified as 33-year-old Biankia Gleason, had managed to escape from the car with help from witnesses and waited in a nearby hotel lobby.  She was then transported to Eskenazi Hospital.

Police investigated the incident further and placed Gleason under arrest for operating a vehicle while intoxicated.
