News: Driver trying to elude police killed in Indianapolis crash

INDIANAPOLIS, IN – Authorities said the driver of a stolen vehicle was killed in a crash while attempting to elude Indianapolis police officers Tuesday morning, WISH reports.

The incident began when an off-duty officer noticed the vehicle going under the speed limit on Interstate 465 while hugging the shoulder without its headlights on.  The incident was reported to on-duty officers, who discovered the vehicle had been stolen in Anderson.

Officers set out in pursuit of the driver of the stolen vehicle, which crashed into a traffic pole at West 62nd Street and Zionsville Road on the northwest side of Indianapolis at about 4 a.m.   The driver was pronounced dead at the scene.

A nearby house was struck by debris from the crash, but no one in the home was injured.

Indianapolis police are conducting an internal investigation to determine whether proper procedures were followed in the pursuit.
